Growing up with a Korean-American identity in Seattle wasn’t always easy. I was conscious of not looking like my classmates, which often made me feel like an outsider. However, those summer vacations in Korea with my family were transformative. They opened my eyes to a larger world and helped me embrace my multicultural background.

Navigating Two Worlds - Korean-American Identity

Living between two cultures meant I had to navigate different expectations. At home, it was all about traditional Korean values—respect, family, and hard work. At school, it was about fitting into American culture. This duality shaped me into someone who could adapt to different environments, making it easier when I began traveling the world for basketball.

Embracing My Korean Roots

Over time, I came to appreciate the richness of my heritage. Learning to speak Korean, attending Korean churches, and eating traditional dishes helped me connect with my roots. The cultural experiences I had in Korea made me proud of who I am, and today, I carry that pride wherever I go.

Takeaway

Embracing a multicultural identity is not about choosing one culture over the other; it’s about finding a balance that feels true to who you are. The experiences I had growing up have taught me the value of diversity and openness.
